ABOUT PILANESBERG

Pilanesberg National Park is located in North West Province of South Africa approximately 170km (roughly 2 hours) away from Johannesburg and 150km (roughly 1.5 hours) away from Pretoria. The park borders the famous Sun City resort and is currently run by the North West Parks and Tourism Board. It it situated in a crater of an extinct volcano which erupted about 1,200 million years ago.The park is 55 0000 hectares (552 ㎢), and is home to the big 5 (Rhino, Elephant, Lion, Buffalo and Leopard) as well as 32 other different species of game.

Pilanesberg was named after Chief Pilane, the progenitor of the "Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela", known as the Bakgatla people
Pilanesberg is the only game reserve set in an alkaline ring complex, it is one of only three alkaline ring complex's in the world
Project Genesis was the relocation of 6000 animals in the 1980's, the largest game translocation in the world to date
The Pilanesberg is a birder's paradise with over 350 species of birds, with the majority being indigenous species
